Get involved…be a Bear Pit Theatre Company Volunteer:
As a volunteer-run community theatre, we welcome anyone with some time and enthusiasm to spare. No experience is necessary and you can get involved in any aspect of our theatre.
The Bear Pit can offer exciting possibilities to share skills and experiences within a dynamic and ambitious arts organisation. We are always looking for volunteers to help with the work we do, whether your interest is in acting, sound, lighting, set design, set construction, marketing and promotion, backstage or front of house.
Volunteers should be 18+ for safeguarding purposes.
On Stage
Whether you’re a seasoned actor, or just want to try something new, there are opportunities for you on our stage in a range of productions. Find out more and how to audition.
Front of House
Our Front of House team plays a critical role in running our theatre, welcoming our audience during each performance.
The team focuses on the public areas of our productions and the overall operation of the theatre. We’re always looking for people to help out with any of these areas – training will be provided if required.

Box Office
Our Box Office team are usually the first point of contact for our customers when booking tickets at our venue. We use Ticket Source as our ticketing software. It is simple and easy to use and there is a user guide to take you through the process with others on hand to help you..
Duty Manager
Before and during each performance, the Duty Manager coordinates with the Stage Manager to ensure that our audiences have an enjoyable time with us. They brief and coordinate our Front of House Team and the Backstage Team to ensure the smooth running and security of the Theatre.
Duty Managers play an important role in ensuring the safety of our audience and front-of-house teams in the theatre.
Bar
The Bar is almost always open when the theatre is open. Our Bar Manager is supported by a team of Bar Staff but additional helpers are always welcome to ensure the audience enjoy their stay and are suitably refreshed.
Ushers
Our ushers are important in looking enhancing the experience of our customers, ensuring they are able to find their seats and look after the health and safety of our audiences as they arrive, during and after the performance. Backstage
Our backstage team work hard behind the scenes both between and during productions. We’re always looking for people to help out with any of these areas who have an interest in what goes on and would like to contribute.

Stage Management/Stage Crew
The Stage Management team ensure that each production runs smoothly coordinating the various backstage teams both before and during each performance. Every time you see a curtain move, or a piece of scenery appear/disappear from stage, the stage management team will be involved.
Lighting/Sound
The technical department is involved with every show and event held at the theatre. The team oversees everything from video projection to sound effects, stage lighting and any special effects.
Set Design, Construction & Painting
Given the wide range of plays we produce, our Stage team do an amazing job creating “simple” rooms, cruise liners, desert islands, World War 1 trenches, and anything in between.
Prompting
The Prompts play an important role during the rehearsal process helping the actors get the lines permanently lodged ready for opening night.
Props
Our Props team collect together the various objects, furniture and decorations that dress the set. Whether it’s a single silver teaspoon, or an entire (working) 1950s kitchen, the Props team has a wide-ranging collection available for use in our own productions, and also for hire. If it’s not in our prop collection, the team is able to make, hire or buy the items a show needs.
Wardrobe
Our Wardrobe team work closely with the Director and production team to make sure that all of the actors are appropriately attired.
Theatre Maintenance
There are a myriad of jobs that our theatre needs and, where possible, we fix or improve the theatre ourselves – a job that our maintenance team oversees.
