Usually, on the first Sunday of every month we gather in The Bear Pit bar to read a new play. All are welcome, although we do ask you to email Chris Dobson at dobspoon@gmail.com if you’d like to come so we have an idea of numbers – do let Chris know as well if you have any ideas for future plays to read!
Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth
Jerusalem (2009), debuting at London’s Royal Court Theatre, presents Johnny “Rooster” Byron—a defiant, ex-stuntman, drug dealer, and mythic Pied Piper figure—holding court in a ramshackle caravan deep in rural Wiltshire as council officials prepare to evict him on St George’s Day. The play unfolds as a joyful yet chaotic ritual, blending the raw rebellion of folk myth with the creeping intrusion of modern bureaucracy. It became emblematic of a shifting England—caught between fading traditions and the advance of development—and earned a reputation as one of the greatest British plays of the 21st century.
