“All is True” is a British fictional film about the final years of William Shakespeare’s life in Stratford upon Avon. It was written by Ben Elton, better known as the scriptwriter of TV comedies, including Upstart Crow, which also delves into Shakespeare’s life in Stratford and London.

“All is True” is not a comedy, but a serious meditation based on the scant knowledge we have of Shakespeare’s life. The film was secretly directed by Kenneth Branagh at Dorney Court in Buckinghamshire, effectively doubling as Stratford, and subsequently distributed by Sony Picture Classics.

It received a moderate critical response, despite Branagh enlisting Judi Dench and Ian McKellen to co-star with him, Branagh taking on the role of Shakespeare.  “All is True” is certainly thought-provoking, focusing on the dynamics of the Shakespeare family, the role of women in Elizabethan England, and the fate of Hamnet, Shakespeare’s favourite offspring.
