Synopsis

Cinema Screening

A biographical period drama shaped by grief, Hamnet explores the emotional rupture at the heart of Shakespeare’s family.

Set in late 16th century Stratford-upon-Avon, the story follows Agnes (Anne) Hathaway and William Shakespeare as they navigate the devastating loss of their eleven‑year‑old son, Hamnet, to plague.

The film traces how this bereavement reshapes their marriage, their surviving children’s lives, and ultimately the creative wellspring that leads Shakespeare toward Hamlet.

It blends intimate domestic storytelling with the wider cultural world of Elizabethan England, emphasising themes of love, legacy, and the transformative power of art.

The film has been widely discussed for its emotionally rich performances and its re‑centring of Agnes as a complex, intuitive figure whose grief and resilience shape the family’s story. Its visual style and Max Richter’s score deepen the sense of elegy and artistic awakening.
