Synopsis

Richard Attenborough’s striking musical satire transforms the tragedy of World War I into an idyllic seaside pier pantomime. Through popular music-hall songs of the era and stark surreal imagery, the film follows the naive optimism of the Smith family as they are swept up in the global conflict, contrasting their experiences against the detached indifference of the military high command. A brilliant, poignant critique of war.
