Synopsis

National Theatre – Screening

Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World unfolds in a small pub on the wild coast of County Mayo in the early 1900s.

One night, a nervous young stranger, Christy Mahon, stumbles in claiming he has fled after killing his father. To his surprise, the locals, bored, romantic, and hungry for excitement, are captivated by his tale.
Pegeen Mike, the publican’s spirited daughter, is especially drawn to Christy’s mix of vulnerability and daring.

As word spreads, Christy becomes an unlikely folk hero, admired for the very act that should have condemned him. His confidence grows, and he begins to relish his newfound status as the “playboy” of the western world.
But the illusion shatters when Christy’s supposedly dead father arrives very much alive, exposing Christy’s story as exaggerated bravado. The community that once celebrated him quickly turns, and Christy must confront who he really is not the legend he briefly became.

The play blends comedy, satire, and lyrical Irish language to explore themes of identity, storytelling, hero‑worship, and the gap between who we are and who we wish to be. It remains one of Synge’s most iconic works and a cornerstone of the Irish Literary Revival.
