Welcome

Welcome to The Bear Pit

Founded in 2008, The Bear Pit is a voluntary organisation which works to build a greater awareness of the performing and visual arts in the historic town of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Based in Rother Street at the rear of the United Reformed Church, The Bear Pit, working closely with its church partners, has made great strides in the creation of a 110 seater “little theatre” ideally suited to the performance of many aspects of theatre as well as providing an intimate space as a community arts venue for smaller exhibitions, concerts and conversational events where audience participation maybe invited.

The Bear Pit Theatre is “a work in progress” and we strive to maintain, update and improve the facilities we offer.  In 2014 we were able to invest in a brand new lighting rig and, with grants from The United Reformed Church and the District Council, the theatre entrance pathway was upgraded to a user-friendly surface with uplighting to enable safe access for all users and particularly for those in wheelchairs. In 2023 we reverted to an end on seating configuration with improved site lines to enable the space to be used as a community cinema along with grants from Stratford Town Trust.

Our Mission:  To celebrate the cultural heritage of theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon by operating an inclusive arts hub accessible to people of all backgrounds, demographics and means. We are committed to promoting diversity in arts experiences and audiences.

If you believe in what we are trying to achieve, please get involved by joining us or generally supporting us by attending the multitude of events taking place in the building.
The Bear Pit has its own theatre company and actively promotes the space for hire by and for the people of Stratford-upon-Avon.
